Ingredients for Cucumber Salad

Here’s an overview of the ingredients. As always, you’ll find the exact quantities at the very bottom of the recipe card.

  • Cucumbers: Snake cucumbers or English cucumbers work best here. They are long, thin, have a tender skin, and few seeds.
  • Red onion or pre-pickled red onions
  • Olive oil: I recommend using extra virgin olive oil.
  • Vinegar: e.g., apple cider vinegar or white wine vinegar
  • Whole-grain mustard: Alternatively, regular mustard (medium-hot)
  • Honey: alternatively, agave syrup or maple syrup
  • Fresh herbs: basil, dill
  • Spices: Salt, pepper, chili flakes (optional)
  • Tip: Instead of fresh red onions, pink pickled onions add a special freshness and a hint of tartness.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • What does “Smacked Cucumber” mean?
“Smacked” here means that the cucumbers are lightly bruised. This helps them absorb the marinade better and makes them especially flavorful.
  • How long does the salad last?
It’s best enjoyed fresh! However, you can store it in the refrigerator for up to 1 day. The cucumber salad will become a bit watery over time.
  • Does this salad go well with grilled food?
Yes! This cucumber salad is the perfect side dish for grilled dishes or Middle Eastern mezze platters.

  • ½ TL Honig oder nach Geschmack
  • 2 TL frisch gehackter Dill
  • 1 EL frisches Basilikum fein gehackt
  • Salz und Pfeffer
  • ¼ TL Chiliflocken
Für das Tzatziki:
  • ca. 230 g griechischer Joghurt
  • 1,5–2 EL Zitronensaft nach Geschmack
  • 2 TL Olivenöl
  • 1 kleine Knoblauchzehe fein gehackt
  • 1 EL frischer Dill fein gehackt
  • 1 EL frische Petersilie fein gehackt
  • Salz und Pfeffer
